I believe in a short now, like that one that just went by. See it? In fact it's so short that I have trouble picking it up and shaking it. It's gone.
I have read and talked to some people about Long Now and still don't have a handle on the idea. Build a clock in the desert that people have to wind? It's awfully presumptuous that people are going to care 50 years from now, let alone 10,000 years from now.
Instead of having a Long Now meeting I'd suggest renting a movie and making a bowl of popcorn.

The clock is amusing, but for me it's more about the seminars, and promoting the (content of) the books written by the lecturers.
People are making the future all day, every day, with billions of tiny, unnoticeable decisions, whether they intend to contribute to big outcomes or not. the futures we think we will probably live in are usually rooted in several assumptions which are already demonstrably false. The seminars show this, and give us a better understanding of what our individual choices mean in a larger context where we can either face the fact that we are making the future all the time whether we like it or not... or simply go on ignoring the issue.
If you attend even one of the lectures, I think you'll be surprised by at least one or two things that they lecturers have to say; often about life in the distant PAST. So much of what never made sense to me in history and social studies classes just turns out to be hooey; Long Now shows me the science behind the doubts I've always had about human life and its conditions.

Re: I am still a fan!
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 4:32 PMIn short I like the Long Now Foundation but I am a fan of Simone not the Long Now...
I like Zander too and think he is a brilliant lad ... He's is one of my best friend's best friend.
Nevertheless, Simone and my relationship transcends events we attend together - we support each other when and where it counts which is why she is my brides maid. (Yay, Simonisita :) GLee).
We could no tpossibly attend ALL of each others activities as we are both such busy ladies with our fingers in too many pies which is what I love about her.

Re: I am still a fan!
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 8:46 PMI'm a fan too... so much so that I have a bag of clothes for her in my closet... Simone... come get some new threads!
I don't go to Long Now functions because I have a very short attention spanned toddler who is way cuter than Jim Mason or Stewart Brand. He's cuter than most humans - cuter than Simone even. And she's harp seal clubbin' cute. -

When people brought their tiny kids to the Philip Longman seminar, I said 'Thank you for not depopulating."

Re: I am still a fan!
Thu, June 16, 2005 - 5:19 AMI believe that in the future, everyone will be a fan of Simone for 15 minutes.
Of course some folks will be fans for a lifetime. -

Re: I am still a fan!
Thu, June 16, 2005 - 12:21 PMI am definitely a lifetime fan barring any horrendous transformations (barbie-esqueness or brainlessness.) -

Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:00 AMI'm still a fan - though I haven't seen the girl for ages! Any Simone sightings? -

Re: ditto!
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 5:59 PMI only see her at Long Now.
Again, I highly recommend it.

Re: ditto!
Fri, July 1, 2005 - 10:46 AMShe is so busy (as per usual) that I believe the best way to spot her is to sit on her doorstep and wait for her to walk her lovely puppy in the morning. Or lure her out with fine cheese and wine. That always works for me. -

Re: ditto!
Wed, July 20, 2005 - 12:54 AMsnuggin'. She's a sucker for snuggin'.
Just stand on a street corner and offer to give out free snugs. She falls for it everytime.

Re: I am still a fan!
Fri, July 1, 2005 - 11:37 AMI am still a fan and I know she has special powers, like the ability to feed hundreds with just one litter of kittens.

Re: I am still a fan!
Fri, July 22, 2005 - 8:54 AMI think this best describes her special powers. Hurrah for Simone (oh yeah and kittens).
